Case Study: Booktopia

Tony Nash has been running internet businesses for 18 years. Booktopia was started as a small side project whilst he and his brother, sister and brother-in-law were running a web marketing consultancy. By utilising a third party that managed the Booktopia website and did their fulfillment it was started on a budget of $10 per day. It took 3 days to sell the first book. By the end of the month they had taken 60 orders. By the 4th month they were up to $30K. By the end of the year $100K per month and the end of 2 years $200K per month.

After 3 years they built their own website, leased a 450 sqm warehouse and bought some shelves on eBay and started doing their own fulfillment. In the 4th year they started to hold stock. They moved to 2,000 sqm of warehouse and office in 2009. In 2011 they added another 2,000 sqm down the road. This May 2014 they are moving in to a 10,000 sqm Headquarters and Distribution Centre in Homebush, Sydney. The company now employs 100 people and turns over $40 million and sells one book every 10 seconds.

No external investment has been received, it has all been off the back of selling more product. Most online businesses start this way and investment may or may not come later. Tony Nash will share with you his strategies to building an online business with no capital. Tony Nash is the guest of Australia Post. Booktopia will ship over 1,000,000 parcels or 2.3 million items through the Australia Post network and he will also talk about the importance of having strategic alliances like Australia Post to succeed in online retailing in Australia.
